On the morning of 31 July 1964, a 365-kilogram probe called Ranger 7 hit the Moon at 2.62 kilometers per second and stopped transmitting. For the seventeen minutes before that, it had been doing its entire job. It carried no other experiments — no soil sampler, no seismometer, no magnetometer — just six television cameras, two redundant chains of three, pointed at a world no American spacecraft had yet photographed up close. Between an altitude of 2,110 kilometers and zero, Ranger 7 returned 4,308 photographs. The last frame, taken roughly 2.3 seconds before impact, resolved features as small as half a meter across. Its receiver noise pattern is visible at the right edge — the spacecraft already crashing while the picture was still being painted onto tape at JPL in Pasadena.

Ranger 7 was the seventh attempt in a program that had, until then, been a public embarrassment. Ranger 6 had reached the Moon in February 1964 and switched its cameras on, then failed to return a single frame because of an electrical short traced — through months of investigation, including frame-by-frame study of Atlas staging plumes — to hot gases from venting propellant igniting on the umbilical connector. The fix for Ranger 7 was small: do not switch the cameras on until eighteen minutes before impact, and run full-power ground tests off the pad. The discipline of restraint, not the addition of new instruments, is what worked.

What I notice about the photograph above is that it is the first of the series — taken seventeen minutes before impact, when the probe was still 2,110 kilometers out and the craters Alphonsus and Ptolemaeus were barely resolved. The clarity comes later. The peanut tradition at NASA mission control is said to have started that morning, when someone in the room was eating peanuts; after impact, the practice stuck. The register of the day is the register of the probe: success meant being willing to fall, and the photograph was the falling.
