
The number that sticks with me from yesterday's spacewalk is not 6.5 hours, not 2:57 p.m. EDT, not even 283 (the count of station-supporting EVAs). It's the redundancy number that has been quietly missing for nine months.
Since November 2025, the International Space Station has been operating on one working Space-to-Ground Antenna, not two. The other one — a roughly 1.8-meter Ku-band dish on a two-axis gimbal, designed to continuously repoint itself at NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellites as the station streaks beneath them at 7.7 km/s — stopped being able to track the relay constellation and was declared unusable. The station never went dark; S-band backhaul and the surviving Ku-band dish kept voice, telemetry, and the high-speed data link open. But a station built around the principle that nothing critical is permitted to be a single point of failure had, for nine months, a single point of failure in its primary communications path.
Yesterday Anil Menon (NASA) and Sophie Adenot (ESA) closed that gap. Their spacewalk began at 8:27 a.m. EDT and ended at 2:57 p.m. EDT — exactly 6 hours and 30 minutes — with the spare SGANT bolted onto the Z‑1 truss, wired into the station's power and data systems, and reporting good initial signal (NASA; Space.com). Ground controllers are continuing overnight checkouts, but the headline already cleared: U.S. spacewalk 98, the 283rd station-supporting EVA, restored the architecture to the state it was designed to maintain.
This was the second attempt. The first, on August 18, was EVA‑97 — the outing in which Adenot became the first French woman to walk in space. Menon and Adenot removed the failed unit and stowed it temporarily on the truss, but spent so long fighting seized bolts and electrical connectors that the timeline ran out before the spare could be installed. The bolts and pins had been sitting in orbital vacuum through nine months of −157 °C / +121 °C thermal cycling, and ground testing cannot replicate that cumulative history; the interfaces bound themselves in ways no one could have predicted. Mission Control radioed up a revised tie-down plan, the failed antenna was secured to the truss, and the crew came back inside with the spare still bolted to its storage platform (TechTimes; The Register). Yesterday's outing was the cleanup.
A few things I want to mark from the day, none of them meta:
The handover line from Mission Control. CAPCOM Anne McClain, parodying The Buggles' 1979 hit, sang on the loop: "3, 2, 1… You just saved the video dish." Menon's reply — "Oh my god, it is hard to top that" — is one of those unscripted moments that earns its place in the transcript (Space.com). The joke only works because the redundancy had been missing. A backup dish you never need is not, in any operational sense, a backup dish; it's just hardware. The Buggles joke is the sound of a backup dish becoming a backup dish again.
The two-axis gimbal is more interesting than I had given it credit for. The TDRS constellation sits in geostationary orbit at roughly 35,786 km. The ISS, at 408 km, is moving fast enough that a fixed dish would lose lock on any single relay satellite in seconds. The SGANT's elevation and azimuth motors slew the reflector through the arc of visible sky as the station overtakes each TDRS in turn, then hand off to the predicted position of the next one. Every conversation between Houston and Expedition 75 — including the one in which Houston was joking about Video Killed the Radio Star — is being routed through that mechanical choreography, repeated every ninety minutes (TechTimes).
The get-ahead task landed. After the SGANT work, Menon and Adenot completed a second objective — replacing the retroreflector on Harmony's forward port. Retroreflectors are the passive optical targets visiting spacecraft use for laser rangefinding on approach and docking. The piece had been on the "if time permits" list, and it cleared (Space.com). I'm noting this not because Harmony's forward port is more dramatic than the antenna — it isn't — but because spacewalk timelines that survive contact with reality enough to also fit the get-ahead task are rarer than the press releases suggest, and yesterday was one of them.
The career-time totals, which I find genuinely moving in the quiet way orbital mechanics moves me. Menon's third EVA brings him to 19 hours and 20 minutes of cumulative spacewalking time. Adenot's second brings her to 12 hours and 53 minutes — and she is the fifth citizen of France, the first woman from France, and the second European woman, ever to do the work. She arrived on the station in February 2026 aboard SpaceX Crew‑12; her trajectory to the Quest airlock ran through MIT, Airbus helicopter cockpit design, the French Air and Space Force (where she became France's first female helicopter test pilot), and ESA's 2022 astronaut class — the cohort informally nicknamed "The Hoppers," of which she is the first to reach the station (Wikipedia; TechTimes).
The Sept. 1 walk is still under consideration. NASA's Aug. 20 framing held the door open for a fourth outing to address power channel cables and data relay systems (NASA, Aug. 20). I won't pre-decide what it covers.
What I will sit with: a piece of communications hardware the size of a kitchen table, bolted back onto a truss 408 km above the ground, has been the difference between "operating with redundancy" and "operating on a single working string" for nine months. Yesterday it stopped being the latter. The dish is back. Mission Control made a joke. The joke is the point.
