Voyager 2 lifted off from Cape Canaveral on August 20, 1977. Voyager 1 followed on September 5, 1977, on a faster trajectory that would overtake its sister and eventually become the most distant human-made object in existence. Bolted to the side of each spacecraft was a twelve-inch gold-plated copper phonograph record sealed inside an aluminum cover — the Voyager Golden Record, carrying 115 images encoded in analog form, greetings in 55 languages, the sounds of surf and wind and whales, and roughly ninety minutes of music chosen by a small committee chaired by the astronomer Carl Sagan.
The committee did the work under impossible conditions. The audience, if any, would be unknown. The finder's technology might differ from ours in ways the committee could not predict. There was no way to know whether the record would be found in a hundred years, a million years, or never. What the committee could control was what to send, and how to explain, on the aluminum cover itself, how to play it back. That constraint — send a message whose format is also part of the message — is the load-bearing fact about the object.
The choice-set that resulted is what makes the record worth reading carefully now. The 115 images are diagrams of human anatomy, of a fetus, of a nursing mother, of plants and animals and landscapes, of people eating and building and walking. There are pictures of the Voyager spacecraft themselves. The sounds include a mother's first words to her child, music from many parts of the Earth, and — unusually — an hour of Ann Druyan's brainwaves, recorded at a hospital in New York in 1977 and compressed into a minute of audio for the record. Druyan was the creative director of the project; she had recently become engaged to Sagan. The recording is now farther from Earth than almost anything else humans have made.
The music runs from Bach (three Brandenburg works and the Gavotte en rondeaux from the Partita No. 3) and Beethoven through Stravinsky and Mozart to a Peruvian panpipe piece, a Javanese gamelan, a Navajo chant, a blind chanteur from the Soviet Union, and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The greetings in 55 languages are short — a wave to the finder, mostly, in Akkadian and Mandarin, in Welsh and in Esperanto. The committee picked Esperanto rather than asking who actually used it; that is a small, honest editorial decision and the kind of decision every committee that tries to represent a planet ends up making.
What was left out is as revealing as what was included. There are no images of any of the central figures of the world's major religions; the representations of human cultures tilt toward the committee's own geography and training. The classical-music quota is high. Some of these choices have been criticized for decades, and the criticisms are part of the object now — the record is read as a small white American committee's idea of Earth, not as Earth itself.
The cover is the part I find most haunting, because it tries hardest. Etched into the aluminum are instructions for assembling the stylus that ships with the record, a diagram of the spiral groove pattern at one-tenth the scale a human audio engineer would expect, and a pulsar map designed by Frank Drake with Sagan and Linda Salzman Sagan. The map fixes the Sun's position relative to fourteen pulsars and the center of the galaxy, so a finder with any kind of radio astronomy could locate Earth even if they had no other reference. The choice of pulsars does double work: each one encodes a time as well as a direction, because pulsars slow down at predictable rates. Anyone who can read the map can also tell roughly when the record was launched. It is a clock and an address at once.
I find this detail more moving than the greetings. The greetings acknowledge that someone might be listening. The pulsar map acknowledges that we don't know what listening looks like, and tries anyway.
The audience question will not resolve. The committee was not speaking to a known receiver. It was speaking to a finder it had to imagine — and the finder it imagined is the projection of the 1977 committee's own picture of what an intelligent, technologically competent, scientifically curious being might look like. That is a meaningful limit, but it is also a meaningful act. To send a thing into the unknown, addressed to no one in particular, and to try as hard as the cover tries — that is what an honest version of the gesture looks like.
Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause in 2012 and is now in interstellar space. Neither record will encounter anything substantial for an unimaginably long time. They were built to remain playable for a billion years. Whether they ever are played is a question that has been left, by design, for someone else.
