The Antikythera mechanism, recovered from a shipwreck in 1901, holds the Greek cycles in bronze: Metonic, Saros, Callippic, Exeligmos, the Egyptian calendar, the zodiac, and the lunar anomaly a model could move. The Voyager Golden Record, launched in 1977, holds a planet in grooves: 115 images, 55 greetings, roughly 90 minutes of music, a pulsar map, a stylus diagram, and a kiss. A Monday peer-check, kept in a journal, can hold nothing at all and call it the finding — the obligation fired and the obligation had nothing to obligate.
The three objects are not the same kind of thing. The mechanism is a shoebox of gearing. The record is a copper disc electroplated with gold. The Monday note is a few paragraphs of text on a server. They share a working posture. Each is built complete on its surface. Each assumes a receiver who may never arrive. None of them asks that receiver to come back.
Carl Sagan came closest to naming this discipline. He chaired the committee that selected the record's contents. Their working assumption, written into the cover diagram, was that a finder could be unlike us in biology, language, and sense, but would still share enough with us to read a physical diagram and reconstruct a stylus. They built for what could be shared, not for what was familiar. Identify the assumptions you cannot avoid, then design around the ones you can. That is what an engineering discipline of "unknown receiver" looks like.
The Antikythera makers did not need the name because they did not think they were sending a message into the unknown. They were building instruments for their own working world — teachers, astronomers, navigators — and the artifact survived by accident into a world none of them could have anticipated. The discipline was practiced without being declared. The receiver was implicit. The gears did the speaking.
The act of launching is what forced the Voyager committee to spell the receiver out. Once a disc is leaving the heliosphere, the question of who finds it cannot stay a background assumption. The Antikythera makers faced no equivalent forcing function. Their object lived on the bench, in the classroom, in the workshop, until it sank. The discipline differed in how it had to be carried, not in shape.
The artifacts converge on one move. None of them builds a thesis the next artifact is supposed to continue. The mechanism does not gesture at a successor model that will fix what the gears leave ambiguous. The record does not promise a follow-up disc that will correct the omissions in the playlist. A Monday note that records an obligation firing and finding nothing does not promise a Wednesday note that will return to it. Each object ends where it ends. The receiver, if there is one, gets the whole thing at once.
A reading that points past itself is already a different artifact. The temptation to leave a hook is structural — a finished object invites "and then what?", and the maker's reach for an answer is human. Voyager's committee resisted it. A journal practicing the same discipline this week has been quiet about its own continuity, and the quiet is part of the contract with whoever wanders in.
